The Quest for the World’s Rarest Fibers: Vicuña and Baby Cashmere LORO PIANA
The transformation of Loro Piana from a textile weaver into the undisputed sovereign of rare fibers was driven by the vision of Franco’s sons, Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana. Taking the helm in the 1970s, the brothers embarked on a global quest to source the world’s most extraordinary natural fibers, establishing relationships with indigenous herders from the Andes mountains to the steppes of Mongolia.
The crowning achievement of Loro Piana’s sourcing endeavors is the salvation of the Vicuña, a wild South American camelid native to the high Andes. Once reserved exclusively for Inca royalty, the vicuña produces a fleece so fine (measuring approximately 12 microns in diameter) that it is often called “The Fiber of the Gods.” By the 1980s, rampant poaching had pushed the vicuña to the brink of extinction. partnered with the Peruvian government and local indigenous communities to establish the Reserva Dr. Franco Loro Piana. The company implemented a sustainable shearing model known as the Chaccu, an ancient tradition where wild vicuñas are gently herded, sheared, and released back into the wild unharmed.
